Hawaj; This Spice Blend Gives Your Coffee Super Powers
Hawaj is the spice you’ve never heard of that takes your coffee to the next level.
Pronounced “huh-why-adge,” this ancient warming spice blend not only makes coffee taste spicy and delicious, but it has unique anti-microbial and health benefits too. Hawaj means “mixture” in Arabic. It originated in Yemen hundreds of years ago. Traditionally, it’s made of cinnamon, ginger, clove and cardamom. Hawaj’s flavor is similar to chai: cardamom and cinnamon provide warmth and depth and ginger adds a nice kick to it. Dr Smood’s own unique signature blend has notes of rose and pomegranate.
Yemeni farmers used hawaj to enhance flavor of their coffee or soups. But it turns out that this specific cinnamon, ginger, clove and cardamom spice blend was very beneficial for gut health, digestion, boosting the immune system and enhancing energy.
And we took this ancient wisdom fused with modern science to create coffee with an edge.
Dr Smood’s Hawaj White Coffee combines this unique spice blend with white coffee for better absorption of the spices’ minerals and white coffee’s high level of caffeine and chlorogenic acid antioxidants (yes, caffeine is an antioxidant!).
What’s ‘white coffee?’ White coffee is lightly and carefully toasted. It’s roasted for less time than regular, dark coffee, making is less acidic while retaining more antioxidants. It also creates a different flavor profile and unique in that it contains higher levels of chlorogenic acid. A plant compound (antioxidant) found in coffee, chlorogenic acid is said to affect how the body handles blood sugar and metabolism which aids in weight loss. For those with high blood pressure, it might affect blood vessels so that blood pressure is balanced. Those that aren’t able to handle regular roasted coffee’s caffeine might better tolerate white coffee: There are no jittery effects, stomach ache or “crash” when sipping white coffee.
We only use carefully toasted white coffee in our Hawaj White Coffee It’s blended together with certified organic hawaj and housemade nut mylk. Together, it has a spicy, nutty and almost tea-like taste. It can be drank on its own for energy or with a meal, acting as a kind of digestive enzyme.
“It’s the ‘healthy coffee option,’ for people looking for something in between” says Dr. Etti Ben-Zion, VP of Research and Development.
