The mountainous landscape is covered by dense rainforest, which is home to several threatened species namely the jaguar, puma, and the spider monkey. It's warm sub-humid climate, heavy rains, and stable temperature make the area ideal for agriculture, coffee in particular. The Santa Cruz bean is cultivated under forest shade at 1800 meters above sea level.
